Maia Magoga, 22, Artist
My love of colour is integral to my style, which has emerged from my mixed South American heritage. Often a particular colour scheme informs the general tone of my piece. When I travel back to Brazil I find inspiration walking through the fruit markets; the colours I see feed my work. Frida Kahlo has been a significant inspiration to me, not just in her use of explosive tones, but primarily in her intimate depiction of a fragility that is so often kept private. She taught me the beauty of vulnerability, which is reflected in my earlier work, a personal account of some mental health issues I have battled with. My work has moved on from then to painting the women who surround me. I love to draw all different kinds of women; I find it healing.
